The "Rumah Terbalik" is a new
attraction located in Kampung Telibong near the town of Tamparuli in
Sabah. Rumah Terbalik literally means "upside-down" house in Malay. With
that kind of name, you pretty much know what you will get to see when
visiting - an upside down house.
It
is pretty easy to get here if you have your own transport. Just drive
from Kota Kinabalu and head north towards Tuaran. Before reaching
Tuaran, you will come to a big roundabout. Take the road at the 3
o'clock position which goes toward Mount Kinabalu. After a few minutes,
you will see the Rumah Terbalik on the left-hand side of the road, just
before a Shell petrol station.
The entrance fees are RM10 per adult, which may be a bit pricy for what you are about to see. You pay your money, and go in. You are allowed to take photographs of the exterior of the building and the upside down car (yes there is one), before you are grouped together by a guide who takes you in.
Before going in, you are told of The Rules which are:
1) No photography inside the house
2) Do not step off the red carpet
3) Do not touch anything
Ummmm... okay. The guide then shows you around the house, pointing out to you the upside down television, the upside down sewing machine, the upside down bed, etc. Yes, everything is mounted upside down to the ceiling (or is it the floor?),
You spend about 15 minutes in the house, then are ushered out. There is a gift / souvenir shop at the back with a cafe where you can have a latte.
If you are on the way to the Kinabalu Park and have 15 minutes to spare, you can pay the Upside Down house a visit. Its only about a 30-minute drive from the city centre.
