Tired of international franchise ice cream chain stores? If you go to the small town of Bentong in Pahang, you will find a chinese kedai kopi (coffee shop) that sells of all things - home made ice cream.
Located on the opposite side of the road from the main bus terminal, Kedai Kopi Kow Po has been around for more than 3 decades. Tan Kow Po, or the "Bentong Ice Cream Uncle", joined the business selling home-made ice cream started by his father Tan Soon Chuan in 1956. Today Kow Po is a veritable Bentong institution.
Kow Po looks like any other chinese coffee shop, the only difference is that it sells ice-cream.
Among the specialties also available here are the ABC and Cendol Kow Po Special. Personally did not find the Cendol to be anything above the ordinary. The true star of the show is the ice-cream, which comes in pandan, coconut, peanut, banana and other flavours.
If you are hungry for more than just ice cream, in front of the Kedai Kopi, a malay makcik (auntie) sells food to eat.
